Urgently Need Dentist/Endodontist Opinion After Dental Visit Today. Please Help!?

Just got back from DDS. Went in because had throbbing pain for 2 days. Last RC was on dec 4 07. It appears done well in xrays, all through the root tips. But it is effecting me. It is sensitive to tap, feels higher than others, and throbs when pressure is on it...even my tongue makes it throb. DDS said after taps and other tests, that it really seems there is still some lingering infection not responding to antibiotics and suggested another course before retreating. I told her it was sens to hot and cold lastnight badly. She said it could still be another tooth but she can't at this point tell which one, however, she believes the recent RC in Dec, is still infected. She has a post grad in Endodontics as well. She is a highly skilled and recommended DDS in my area. I'm confused. One minute I have no more RC's, the next I'm in pain and going thru another. Any advice, opinions, suggestions? Does Ice test give positive RC diagnose? I'm too afraid to do hot again. I'm so worried.

Hi Angelina ,

Its dfntly not another tooth if you are able to point pain to this RC treated tooth.. If you arent able to point out which tooth is hurting you and it is more generalised pain then yes it could be another tooth.. Then you will have to check with an xray. Yes, there could be a residual infection in the RC tooth and a RVG could actually point out the minature infection which would b dark in colour in the xray whereas your filling would be white in colour . . For now the best treatment would be redoing the RC and that could save your tooth.. or you could take your analgesics and wait for a week. One more thing have you crowned your tooth coz then the filling underneath would be intact? else ther could have been a crack and food seepage. Dont have to do hot test again as the pain is present which means there is infection. Dont panic about the treatment the second time you wil go thru it smoothly ! Take care
Reply:You should do what your endodontist told you, she is trained to deal with these problems. For diagnosing RCT we have to perform many tests as you have been done on like tapping, reaction to hot and cold, electric pulp tests and.... If you were my patient I would do a retreatment for you, but again I will tell you to do what your endodontist tells you.
Reply:Let me say this with all honesty, there are individuals in many professions that have extraordinary abilities to gather and retain educational material mentally...That however doesn't insure that the individual has the dexterity and actual practical ability to apply the education and information they had retained. There is "Book Smart" and there is "Practical Ability"... some don't have both. Sounds to me like you need a second opinion about your dental issues. Reputation can be misleading as to actual competence. The information you provided suggest that you do need a second opinion. There is a reason residual infection doesn't clear up within a normal period of time, some of that reason may very well be the RC's were not properly completed. Don't let this issue continue, RC infection destroys bone structure and can lead to required extraction.
Reply:I just had a wisdom tooth pulled because that. My tooth was the infection in the tooth. Try to gently press on the teeth until you feel the one that reacts the most
