Does a regular dentist DDS need a special license to perform a root canal?

I had a root canal done by a dentist (which I believe I really didn't need because of very min bone lost). Anyhow, now I have to go to a Endodontics to have it look at and pay over $800.00 out of pocket cost because my insurance already paid once for the root canal on that tooth. I am also getting two different stories.. The Endo tells me the dentist should never perform root canal and the dentist tells me I could if I needed to. Someone isn't telling me the truth and I am in pain dealing with it.

Does a regular dentist DDS need a special license to perform a root canal?
Any licensed dentist can perform root canal surgery if he or she chooses. Most choose not to because it is tedious and special gear is needed to do them quickly. Sounds like the dentist and the endodontist do not have a good working relationship. Most endodontists would never say that about a General Practitioner, even if the GP totally screwed up the procedure. Do the GP a favor let him know what the Specialist said, pony up the money, ask the GP if they would consider giving you, or the Insurance company the money back out of just shear kindness.

good luck
Reply:I have several root canals performed by a regular dentist. Your endo sounds like he/she is full of it. Get in touch with the American Dental Society and get the real story so you will know what the heck is going on.
Reply:Yes dentists learn how to perform a root canal. I do believe if it is a complicated case, they need to refer to a specialist. And that's just the case, maybe you needed a specialist, but that was at the discretion of your dentist...or your request for a second opinion.
Reply:I'm not buying the endo's argument. The DDS's are trained to do root canals in dental school, it's not a complex procedure. They're fully trained and capable. What are they supposed to do, just clean teeth? They have dental technicians for that. I think the endo is trying to drum up more business and monopolize its little industry there.
Reply:A regular dentist can do a root canal. My dentist did one for me, but it was an easy one with no complications. If I had medical issues or it was particularly complex, he said he refers those patients to a specialist. It is usually cheaper if the dentist is able to do it.

Differnece b/w DDM & DDS?

What's the difference? Which one can perform fillings?

Differnece b/w DDM %26amp; DDS?
DDM= Doctor of dental medicine

DDS= Doctor of Dental Surgery

They both can perform fillings, this difference is related to which program they graduate from in school, both are used interchangeably. Ultimately they are a general dentist.
Reply:I'm giving you an American answer. I don't know if there is a distinction in other countries, so please believe someone else if they specify a country.

Both can perform fillings. A DMD is the same kind of dentist as a DDS. The "DMD" is just thought of as a more "modern" degree by some schools and more reflective of the amount of medicine that is incorporated into the modern curriculum in dental schools. My dad graudated from the same school as I did. He was a DDS and I am a DMD. I know of one school that actually let the graduating students CHOOSE which degree they had put on their diploma for a few years while they were making the transition from DDS to DMD.

Whats the difference between DDS and DMD??

What is the difference and what do these titles actually mean.... is one degree better than the other??

Whats the difference between DDS and DMD??
As a dentist I can assure you that there is NO difference between the DDS and DMD degrees, this is just a preference of the school when awarding degrees and has more to do with tradition. I myself earned the DMD which is: Doctor of Dental Medicine 0r Doctor of Medical Dentistry; the DDS is: Doctor of Dental Surgery. Students in both programs learn the EXACT same thing and can do all of the same procedures.
Reply:The Dr. above is absolutely correct, there is NO DIFFERENCE between the two degrees. Both my dad and grandfather are dentists and my dad has a DMD and my grandfather a DDS, they work in the same office and do the exact same procedures.
Reply:My wife had a bad fall and broke off 8 of her front teeth. She went to our regular dentist a "DDS" he said he could not handle the extraction of the teeth and referred us to another dentist who could handle her problem, the other guy is also a DDS according to his business card. Our regular dentist said he could not handle her problem due to the medication and her age. The second fellow also a DDS, according to his card" Diplomate, American Board of Oral %26amp; Maxillofacial Surgery" It was explained to us that if something was to happen he was more equipped to handle it. Also not all dentist are qualified to give you a full anthesia.
Reply:they studied the same thing but got diffrent degrees at graduation

dds means doctor of dental surgery and dmd means doctor of dental medicine
